Make a list! #StudentHack

Having routine and order is  going to help make this home learning adventure run smoothly.

  1. Create a “to do” list. Plan this at the end of each day for the next day. Use the school timetable suggestions and write up the pieces of work that need to be tackled the following day and allocated a set time for each. Be reasonable and realistic. You want to make sure you are allocating sufficient time. The great thing about “to do” lists, in addition to the organisation factor, is that you get to mark off the tasks as you work through your day. A list of marked off tasks can be satisfying and motivational.

  2. Create another list “I did” This is where you record what you have done. Sometimes what we plan to do and what actually happens are very different. If we are relying solely on the ticks on the “to do” list, then at the end of some days we can be a little deflated. Especially if tasks we are undertaking become unexpectedly complicated or we underestimate the time required. “I did” lists can overcome this and provide useful information for future planning. You can use this information to give feedback to your teachers too. They will find it helpful to know how you are pacing the workflow.

  3. The third list happens at the end of the day. This list is a “mindset” list. When you have completed your “I did” and your “to do” for the next day, take yourself through this mindset coaching exercise.

Ask yourself these questions and write the answers down on a notepad:

    1. If tomorrow’s home learning school day is successful how will I know?

    2. What will I have done?

    3. What will I be thinking?

    4. How will I feel physically?

    5. How will I be emotionally?

Write down all of those thoughts. Read over them. Put that page of your notepad on your  desk ready to be the first thing you see when you hit the books the next day. Check in with your “mindset” list a few times during the next day. #SelfCoaching and positive “Mindset” sorted!

Remember you are not alone in this. Reach out to your teachers for help. Get your parents on board to help too. Maybe you can reach out to your classmates to sort out the lists for the day and keep each other honest as you work through them.
